In-person onboarding

You'll first connect with your personal coach on Zoom to design your comprehensive plan, then we'll walk you through your first session at the gym in person. No awkward moments - we'll guide you so you know exactly how to use all the equipment and follow your workouts. Further guided in-person sessions are available if you need them so you feel totally comfortable training on your own.

Train on your schedule

Enjoy ultimate flexibility and zero lines at the squat rack. You'll get a key code and an app with everything you need to train on location or on the road without missing a beat.

A coach in your pocket

Personal trainers are only on the clock for the time you've booked - but not your Platinum coach. They'll look over your data and provide video form feedback, nutrition and lifestyle support, and answers to questions throughout the week.

Weekly check ins keep the big picture on track

Accountability and consistency make the biggest difference in keeping fat loss and performance moving forward. Every week you'll submit a check-in to your coach, and they'll respond with detailed feedback and next steps.

Marcus Filly created  Functional Bodybuilding in 2016 after burning out from competitive CrossFit. He has over twenty years of experience coaching clients remotely and in person, and writing training programs currently used by tens of thousands of athletes around the world. He is a sought-after fitness professional who has been featured in Men's Health and Sports Illustrated, among others, and has given seminars worldwide. Marcus was raised in Mill Valley and has ten years of experience owning and running gyms in Marin County.

 

Our team of career coaches includes a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Registered Dietician, and Certified Postpartum and Pregnancy Specialist. All of our coaches are compassionate, caring, and bring years of experience getting results for clients who want to lose fat and build more strength and confidence.

 

You will be paired with a coach who matches your personality and needs, but our coaches frequently work together to help clients overcome injuries or meet specific nutritional or lifestyle challenges. Our coaches meet weekly to continually improve their coaching skills. Twice per month you can also attend optional Platinum community calls, where Marcus educates on training, nutrition, and lifestyle along with Q&A (recordings available).

-------  QUESTIONS

How is this different from personal training?

A personal trainer is only "on" during your scheduled hour. Our coaches review your videos, answer your questions, and guide you on nutrition every week - whether or not you have a session booked. You're never training in the dark.

Is this only for serious athletes?

Not at all. Our clients range from former athletes who lost their footing to busy professionals who've never had a real system, including people who have never done strength training before. The common thread is wanting something that works long-term - not a sprint that puts you right back at square one. 

What if I travel a lot or have an unpredictable schedule?

Platinum coaching goes where you go. Many of our members train at our San Rafael gym, in hotel gyms when they travel, or even at home when the kids are sick. Your program lives on the app, your coach is on WhatsApp, and the plan adjusts to wherever you are. You never lose momentum because your location or schedule changed.

What if I have an injury or physical limitation?

Injury management is a core part of what we do - not an obstacle to it. Your coach will modify your program appropriately, monitor your progress through video feedback, and work with you to keep training productively while you heal.

How quickly will I hear from my coach?

Video feedback and questions are typically answered within 24 hours. For tech issues or urgent questions, our support team is available sooner. You won't be left waiting if something comes up. At the gym, staff are frequently present if you have questions, and there are informal group sessions at 5am and 9am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday if you would like to train with the support of other clients and staff.
