Coach Note: Getting On the Ground
Sitting and performing tasks low to the ground was required on a daily basis for our recent ancestors. This forced our recent ancestor into positions such as criss cross, seiza, cowbody, full squat. These positions require full range of motion at the hip and assist in maintaining those ranges for lifetimes.
In more recent times, evidence has suggested a higher prevalence of hip pathology in western culture compared to eastern culture. One can theorize the different daily activity demands of eastern culture require greater ranges of motion in the hip, squatting to use the restroom or to rest, sitting and/or sleeping lower to the ground.
These traditions of being closer to the ground are assisting in the maintenance of hip health. Get on the ground more and respect the evolution of our anatomy to reap the benefits of long term physical health.
